IPTV Not Working? Diagnose It in 5 Minutes

IPTV not working at all? Work through the causes in order — account, app, network, portal, provider — and find out which of the five it is in five minutes.

The short answer

Start with the account, not the app. An expired subscription and a hit connection limit cause most sudden failures, and some servers report a limit as an invalid login. Stop playback on every other device and retry — that takes ten seconds. If it still fails, try the same channel on mobile data.

On this page

"IPTV not working" covers several completely different faults — a screen that will not load a channel, an app that reports invalid credentials, a guide that is empty, a picture that is black with sound playing. They have different causes, and the fastest route through them is elimination rather than a list of fixes to try at random.

Five checks, in the order that finds the answer soonest. Most people are done at check two.

If your channels play but stall and pause, that is a different fault — the guide to buffering on IPTV handles that one.

checks, in order — most faults are found in the first two

Mobile data

the single test that separates your network from the server

Some vs all

one dead channel and a dead service are different problems

First, name the symptom

Different failures look similar on a TV. Match yours before you change anything:

What you see What it usually means Check
"Invalid credentials" / login rejected Expired account, connection limit, or a typo 1
App opens, channel list empty Playlist failed to refresh 2
Channel list loads, nothing plays Network path or portal blocked 3
One channel dead, the rest fine That source feed 5
Black screen with audio playing Decoder mismatch on your device 2
Endless loading spinner on every channel Network or server, not the app 3
Guide blank, channels play fine EPG only — not a service fault See below
Everything failed at once, all devices Account or provider side 1, then 5

If only your programme guide is missing and the channels themselves play, nothing is broken in your subscription — go straight to fixing an EPG that will not load.

Check 1 — Your account

Boring, and it is the answer more often than anything else on this page.

Has the subscription expired? Most players show the expiry date on the account or profile screen. Annual plans expire on a date you set twelve months ago and have long forgotten.

Are you over your connection limit? This is the one that catches people. A plan sold as one, two, three, four or five connections allows that many devices streaming at the same time. Installing the player on six devices is fine — six of them playing at once is not. Some servers report the limit as an authentication failure rather than "too many connections," which sends people off diagnosing the wrong thing entirely.

The test takes ten seconds: stop playback on every other device in the house, then retry. If it works, that was it, and either coordinate or move to a plan with more connections. Ours run from one to five — the plan tiers are listed here.

Is a device streaming that you forgot about? A tablet left on a channel in a bedroom, a phone paused mid-stream, a second TV on standby with the app still open. All of these hold a connection.

Check 2 — The app

Once the account is confirmed, the app is next, and there are four things worth doing in this order.

App-level fixes, in order

  1. Force a playlist refresh. Every player caches your channel list. If the last refresh failed you can be left with an empty or partial list while the service itself is fine. Refresh manually and read the error if it fails — the error is the diagnosis.
  2. Clear the app cache, not the app data. Cache clears stale stream fragments and guide files. Data wipes your login and setup. Cache first, always.
  3. Re-enter the credentials by hand. They are case-sensitive, and TV on-screen keyboards introduce silent capitalisation errors. Retype rather than assuming the subscription is wrong.
  4. Switch the decoder. If you get a black screen with audio, the video track is arriving but not decoding. Toggle between hardware and software decoding and the picture usually comes back immediately.
  5. Try a second player with the same login. Two minutes, and it is decisive. If a different app plays the same channel, the first app is the fault.

That last step is worth dwelling on. Because a GTAIPTV subscription is a standard M3U playlist or an Xtream Codes login rather than a locked-in app, you can put the same credentials into any player and see whether the problem follows you. Providers that ship their own mandatory app cannot offer that test at all. The player comparison covers the alternatives worth keeping installed as a spare.

IPTV Smarters Pro not working

The two failures people report most on Smarters are a rejected login and a channel list that loads but plays nothing.

For a rejected login, work check 1 first — expiry and connection limit are the usual culprits, and Smarters surfaces both as an authentication error. If the account is definitely fine, delete the playlist profile inside the app and re-add it by hand rather than editing the existing one; the app can hold onto a stale server address after a provider-side change.

For a list that loads but will not play, it is a network or decoder issue rather than an account issue — go to check 3, then toggle the decoder. Detailed setup steps are in the IPTV Smarters Pro guide.

TiviMate not working

TiviMate is more aggressive about caching than most players, which makes it fast and occasionally makes it stubborn.

A blank or partial channel list is nearly always a failed playlist refresh. Open the playlist settings and force an update; if the update errors, the message tells you whether it is the account or the server. A guide that stops updating while channels still play is an EPG issue and does not indicate a broken subscription.

If TiviMate crashes on launch after an update, clear the cache before reinstalling — a reinstall costs you your channel arrangement and favourites, which on TiviMate is real work to rebuild. The TiviMate setup guide covers the configuration.

Check 3 — The network path

If the account is valid and a second player fails the same way, look at how your device reaches the server.

Test on mobile data. Tether your phone and run the same channel. This is the most informative single test available:

  • Works on mobile data, fails on home Wi-Fi — your home network or your internet provider is filtering or misrouting. Try a different DNS, and try a VPN.
  • Fails on both — nothing in your home is responsible. Go to check 5.

Restart the modem and router. Unplug both for sixty seconds, modem first on the way back up.

Try a different DNS. DNS decides whether your device can find the server at all, so it affects streams that will not start. It has nothing to do with stalling mid-stream, but it is a genuine cause of "nothing plays."

Try a VPN. If a stream that fails on your home connection works over a VPN, your internet provider is doing something to that traffic. That is the clearest evidence of interference you can gather at home — how to tell whether your ISP is throttling IPTV covers what to do next.

Check 4 — The device

Less often the cause of a total failure than of buffering, but it happens.

Restart it properly by pulling the power for thirty seconds, rather than using sleep. Check that free storage is not almost exhausted, because a device that cannot write a cache file behaves erratically in ways that look like network faults. Confirm the date and time are correct — a wrong system clock breaks the security handshake with the server and produces connection errors that make no sense otherwise.

On a Fire TV Stick specifically, check that it is powered from its own wall adapter rather than the TV's USB port. The Firestick buffering guide covers the Fire TV specifics.

Check 5 — The provider side

If your account is valid, a second player fails identically, and it fails on mobile data too, the fault is upstream. There is nothing left in your house to fix.

Two shapes of upstream failure:

One channel, or a handful. A single source feed has dropped. The rest of the service works normally. This is common, usually short-lived, and worth reporting because providers often do not know until someone says.

Everything, at once, on every device. A server or account-system problem. Rarer, and support will already be aware.

Either way, report it in a form that can be acted on.

What to send support

  • The exact error message, or a photo of the screen
  • Device type and model, and the player app and version
  • Every channel or only some — and if some, which ones by name
  • Whether it also fails on mobile data and on a second player
  • The time it started and a recent speed test, wired if possible
  • Your ISP, and whether a VPN was on

A message with those six items usually gets a specific answer on the first reply. "It's not working" usually gets a checklist you have already done. Our support runs 24/7 by WhatsApp and email, in English and French, and detail is what turns it into an actual investigation.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my IPTV stop working suddenly when nothing changed?

The three usual causes are an expired subscription, a connection limit being hit because another device in the house started streaming, and an app update that reset a setting. All three feel like nothing changed from your side. Check the expiry date on your account first, then close the stream on every other device and retry, then look at whether your player updated recently.

Why does IPTV Smarters Pro say my login is invalid when it worked yesterday?

Usually one of three things. Your subscription reached its end date. You are over your simultaneous connection limit, which some servers report as an authentication failure rather than a connection error. Or the app has stored an old server address after a provider-side change. Re-entering the credentials by hand, exactly as supplied and case-sensitive, resolves the third case; the first two need your provider.

Why does TiviMate show no channels after it was working fine?

Almost always a playlist that failed to refresh. TiviMate caches your channel list and updates it on a schedule, and if the refresh fails — because of a network blip, an expired account, or a changed server address — it can end up with an empty or partial list. Force a manual playlist refresh in settings first. If that fails with an error, the problem is the account or the server, not the app.

IPTV works on Wi-Fi but not on my mobile data, or the other way round. Why?

That points at network-level filtering or routing rather than at your subscription. Some networks block the ports or domains IPTV portals use, and mobile carriers sometimes route differently to a given server. It is the clearest single signal that the fault is the network path, not the account — and it is the case where a VPN most reliably helps, because it changes the path entirely.

What does a black screen with sound mean on IPTV?

The stream is arriving but your device cannot decode the video track. Switch the player's decoder — hardware to software or the other way — and the picture usually returns. If it happens on one channel only, that channel is probably using a codec your device does not support in hardware. If it happens on all channels, it is the decoder setting.

How do I know whether IPTV is down for everyone or just me?

Test the same channel on a completely different network — tether to your phone's mobile data. If it fails there too, nothing in your home is responsible. Then check whether other channels work: a genuine outage usually takes out a group of channels or everything, while one dead channel among hundreds is a single source feed. Contacting support with both results gets you an answer far faster than reporting that it does not work.

Do I need to reinstall my IPTV app to fix it?

Rarely, and it should not be an early step because you lose your setup. Clearing the app's cache achieves most of what a reinstall does without wiping your playlist. A reinstall is worth doing once if an app update clearly broke something and clearing cache did not help. Doing it repeatedly is superstition, not troubleshooting.

What should I send support when IPTV is not working at all?

The exact error message or a photo of the screen, your device type and model, the player app and version, whether it fails on every channel or some, whether another device on the same connection also fails, whether it fails on mobile data too, and the time it started. Those seven items let a provider tell you in one reply whether it is your account, your network, or their server.

The five-minute version

Check the expiry date and stop every other stream in the house. Force a playlist refresh and clear the app cache. Try a second player with the same login. Try it on mobile data. If it still fails, it is upstream — report it with the six details above.

Two of those five take under a minute and account for most of the faults people spend an evening on.

If you are here because a service has been unreliable for weeks rather than because of a single bad night, that is a different decision — what actually makes an IPTV service stable covers what to look for, and a 24-hour free trial lets you test a replacement on your own device before paying for anything.

Key takeaways

5 points
  • A blank channel list is usually a failed playlist refresh, not a dead subscription; force a manual refresh and read the error it returns.
  • Black screen with sound is a decoder mismatch, not a broken stream — toggle between hardware and software decoding and the picture returns.
  • Clear the app cache, never the app data. Data wipes your playlist and login, and a reinstall costs you your channel arrangement and favourites.
  • A wrong system clock on the streaming device breaks the security handshake with the server and produces connection errors that make no sense otherwise.
  • One dead channel among hundreds is a single source feed, not an outage — worth reporting, but nothing at your end will fix it.
