Apple TV is one of the easier devices to set IPTV up on and one of the most misdescribed. Most general guides were written for Android and then lightly edited, which is how you end up reading instructions to install TiviMate on a device that has never been able to run it.

So the honest starting point: on an Apple TV you use App Store players, and nothing else. That constraint is real, but it is not much of a problem, because the players that exist there are decent and setup takes about five minutes.

What tvOS actually allows

Apple TV runs tvOS, which installs software only from the App Store. There is no Downloader app, no unknown-sources toggle, and no APK. A developer route exists — a Mac running Xcode can install an app onto an Apple TV — but on a free developer account those builds expire after seven days, which makes it useless as a way to watch television.

That is the whole restriction. It is more limiting than Fire TV or Android and far less limiting than Roku, where the store barely serves this category at all.

The practical consequences:

• You get whatever tvOS players exist, and the selection is smaller than on Android.

Which players exist on tvOS

What to look for when choosing, in order of how much it will affect your day:

If the player you want does not exist on tvOS, you can run it on an iPhone, iPad or Mac and AirPlay to the Apple TV. It works well by mirroring standards, because everything stays inside Apple's ecosystem.

The trade-offs are the same as any mirroring: the source device must stay awake and its battery drains, there is added latency, picture quality is re-encoded rather than direct, and a phone call interrupts you. Fine for an occasional game, tiring as a nightly routine.
