Six steps, in order
- Find the MAC address. Printed on a sticker under the box, and shown under System Settings → About or System Information. It normally starts 00:1A:79.
- Send it to your provider and wait for confirmation. Nothing works before the box is registered. This is not a step you can configure your way around.
- Open the portal settings. Settings → System Settings → Servers → Portals. The path is essentially the same across MAG generations even where the icons differ.
- Enter the name and URL. Portal 1 Name is just a label — type anything. Portal 1 URL must be exactly what your provider supplied, including the http or https prefix and any trailing path.
- Save and reboot from the power menu. Do not pull the plug. The portal is read at boot, so the restart is what actually applies it.
- Check the guide, then build favourites. The channel list and guide arrive from the server. Once they populate, put the channels you watch into favourites — on a remote-driven box this is the difference between usable and tedious.

Two configuration notes that catch people out. The portal URL is case-sensitive and unforgiving — a missing trailing slash or a mistyped character produces a generic error that looks identical to a service outage. And if your box has an Advanced Settings page under System Settings, leave it alone unless your provider has told you to change something there; the defaults are correct for nearly everyone.

Which MAG models still make sense
Infomir has produced a long line of MAG boxes and they are not equivalent.

- You want a device that behaves exactly like a cable box, for someone who does not want to manage software. A MAG is a good answer. Set it up once and it never changes.
- You want a choice of players, a guide you can improve, and the ability to move your subscription between devices. A MAG is the wrong answer, and an Android TV box or a Fire TV Stick will serve you far better for less money.
